Residents from Good Shepherd’s senior living community recently set out for an enriching day in downtown Little Rock with a trip to the historic Old State House Museum. Originally constructed approximately 190 years ago, it holds the distinction of being the oldest surviving state capitol building west of the Mississippi River.

Inside, our active seniors explored a wide array of collections capturing the rich tapestry of Arkansas history—from pottery and architectural drawings to classic music memorabilia and an iconic gallery of Arkansas First Ladies’ gowns. To top off the visit, the museum’s ballroom offered panoramic views of the Arkansas River.

For our independent living residents, outings like this offer far more than just a refreshing change of scenery. Group trips provide a wonderful opportunity to break up daily routines, boost overall mood, and spark shared memories with friends and neighbors.

Visiting historic places naturally evokes a sense of nostalgia, but it does something even deeper: it helps us feel grounded in our world and connected to the past, present, and future. Together, these shared experiences nurture our vitality, foster community, and add to the everyday life satisfaction that makes our retirement community feel like home.
